will after market hid bulbs replace factory hid bulbs?

will after market hid bulbs replace factory hid bulbs?
Some cars come with factory hid lights, but I don’t like the temperature color they offer. Is it possible to replace the bulbs with a different temperature (higher) and it will still work with stock ballasts and such? Or do I have to replace the ballasts?
